Session Descriptions

Coached Flat Water

Coached flat water sessions are aimed at people new to kayaking, with the aspiration for developing into kayak disciplines of white water kayaking, sea kayaking or any other. There will be coaching to teach the basic strokes and boat handling skills for flat water. These coaching sessions will lead to confident paddling in flat water, allowing progression into other areas of kayaking such as Sea Kayaking and White Water Kayaking.

Coached White Water Sessions

Coached sessions are for people progressing from flat water paddling to moving and white water paddling, so ideal for people wanting to get onto river paddling or gain confidence for sea conditions that are not flat calm. Skills being taught include basic forward paddling in moving water, ferry gliding across the current, breaking in and out of eddies and paddling upstream. With the basic skills mastered, coaching will teach breaking in & out of more powerful water, developing skills for confident forward paddling in white water to allow running the full white water course and surfing on smaller wave features.

Supported White Water Sessions

These sessions are aimed at paddlers who are developing Grade 3 river paddling skills and confidence. This allows developing paddlers to get time on the water without the formal coaching, but with experienced club members on hand to offer advice.

The full course will be available to paddlers who have made two successful runs of the course with at least one successful break in and one successful break out at a coached session. The outflow will be available to paddlers able to demonstrate key skills of breaking in and out in that area.

Paddlers should be able to demonstrate successful self-rescue of themselves and their equipment, although normal river running rules apply, with all paddlers looking out for the safety of others.

Open White Water Sessions

Open sessions are available to confident Grade 3 river paddlers. These are recreational evenings for club paddlers to get evenings on the White Water Course without the need to be coaching, mentoring and rescuing new paddlers.
